Vaccination saves more lives than any other health intervention.

But immunization can’t take place in a vacuum. By itself, it isn’t sufficient to transform the health of people in the poorest countries. A 2004 GAVI Alliance study found four principal barriers to increasing immunization coverage:

  • Unpredictable funding in remote areas
  • Lack of transportation
  • A shortage of human resources
  • A need for training and motivation.

To overcome these barriers, 49 of 72 GAVI-eligible countries have applied for funds to strengthen their health systems. Countries address a variety of bottlenecks with health systems strengthening funds.
