Poverty and disease form a vicious circle

The GAVI Alliance is helping 72 of the world’s poorest nations break this cycle. The average per capita income in these countries is just $3 per day. GAVI increases the chances that children will grow up, learn, and be able to contribute to their community and country.

"GAVI has helped Ghana reach over 3 million children with yellow fever vaccine and more than 2.6 million children with a vaccine that protects against both hepatitis B and Hib."
- Ghana’s Minister of Trade Joseph Ansah-Baidoo, speaking on behalf of President John Kufuor at the Immunize Every Child launch.

We are guided by seven insights gleaned from a half century of development aid. Our finance:

  • Addresses needs countries identify and sets priorities in harmony with other programs and funding
  • Targets countries and regions with the greatest need and the most room for improvement
  • Scales up quickly through simple and cost-effective practices
  • Ties funding to performance
  • Increases predictability and reduces program costs
  • Supports program results that are monitored and evaluated to ensure accountability
  • Promotes sustainability

Countries look to long-term and predictable funding from GAVI to surmount the costs of the initial introduction of new vaccines and expand the provision of new ones. This funding takes five different shapes. It supports:

  • Immunization
  • New and underused vaccines
  • Injection safety
  • Health system strengthening
  • The participation of civil society
