Advance Market Commitment
The GAVI Alliance is capturing the power of the marketplace through an innovation called an Advance Market Commitment. The AMC uses money pledged by Canada, Italy, Norway, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to guarantee a competitive market for vaccine developers once they deliver a product that is effective and safe.
The result: a vaccine for pneumococcal infections will be available 10 to 15 years sooner.
Bringing new products on line faster is not itself the goal. The goal is to protect millions of children currently condemned to suffer and die from infectious diseases. WHO estimates that up to 700,000 children under five die each year from pneumococcal infections. Nearly all of these child deaths are in the world’s poorest countries - GAVI-supported countries.
The AMC employs market incentives:
- Market entry - the AMC is open to all players, including multi-national and emerging biotech companies and vaccine manufacturers.
- Competition - the AMC is designed to sustain 2-3 firms to encourage adequate capacity and price competition.
- Continuing innovation - over a 7-10 year period, the AMC will develop multiple products that respond to country demand for vaccines that best meet their children’s needs.
